About this work:

‘In Green Distance' refers to the distance of memory and the notion of two different places being inhabited at the same time. Where something settles ( the enclosed dandelion clock among the open twigs ) can be an awkward juxtaposition of different sensibilities, but with time, an accommodation takes place.

My recent paintings and drawings loosely reflect ‘the park’ as a site of re-creation, an in-between space that suggests a certain amount of freedom and playfulness. With this in mind, I am interested in making a connection between the locations of rural Mayo, where my parents left, and London, where they went. The parks of London were the places where my parents found a kind of rural solace, albeit a constructed one, in an unfamiliar city. For myself, growing up in London, the park provided a formative experience of nature framed by urbanity. Now based in Galway, I still move between two places, carrying with me contrasting notions of home. I’m interested in the mirroring of these locations to each other, their vast differences and moments of familiarity - these paintings and drawings create an after-image, a curious poignancy that is a complex and ambivalent expression of diaspora.
